The number of people monitoring their health from home has increased in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, The Business Insider estimates that 30 million U.S citizens will use at-home monitoring devices by 2024.
At-home blood pressure monitoring helps hypertensive patients
A study carried out by British researchers examined 1,000 adults with poorly controlled blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg when the study began. After one year of self-monitoring their blood pressure, they reduced their average systolic blood pressure by -3.5 mm Hg, whereas those adults who did not, were not able to reduce their systolic blood pressure at all.
Research has also shown that home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) can improve outcomes in the long term. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in 2020 examined 2,590 adults who had a mean blood pressure of 151.8/85 mm Hg. After one year of self-monitoring their blood pressure, they achieved 33.9% blood pressure control and 39% control after five years.
HBPM is a useful tool for people with uncontrolled hypertension. There are many benefits of HBPM; it encourages self-control, helps to track treatment, saves time and money, and can reduce blood pressure.
Self-Monitoring helps with weight loss
Weight management has also benefited from the use of at-home technologies. A study revealed a significant association between self-monitoring and weight loss. The use of digital scales and personal digital assistants have helped overweight adults reduce their weight. The key relies on having participants engaged every day and being aware of their current health status. As another study about weight loss revealed, weighing every day is what leads to greater adoption of weight control behaviors and greater weight loss overall.
